Mr. Friedman’s practice focuses on financing, capital markets, acquisitions and sales, development, leasing and construction. Mr. Friedman regularly represents clients in a wide range of real estate matters, including restructuring, workouts and refinancings; preparation and negotiation of loan documents; leasing; real estate syndications; preparation and negotiation of partnership and management agreements; foreclosures and evictions. He has closed some of the largest and most sophisticated financing and workout transactions in the real estate industry throughout the nation. Mr. Friedman’s clients include international and domestic investors, syndicators, sponsors, private equity funds, real estate funds, owners, tenants, residential and commercial developers, construction and permanent lenders.

Mr. Friedman is also the Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Ramath Orah on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and is fluent in Hebrew and Yiddish.

Prior to joining Sheppe LLP, Mr. Friedman practiced law at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and was a partner in the real estate departments at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, P.C. and Smith, Gambrell & Russell LLP. In addition to his law firm background, Mr. Friedman also worked for several years at a successful investment fund.

REPRESENTATIVE MATTERS

  • Represented investment banks and leading real estate investment trust in lending programs, including such transactions as acquisitions financing of multiple buildings in a major urban center for condominium conversion, acquisition and development financing of mixed use property, and acquisition of portfolio of unsold residential cooperative and condominium units.
  • Represented investors and developers (including major New York developers) in acquisitions and dispositions of shopping centers, IRC Section 1031 tax deferred exchange transactions, and multiple assemblages of New York City contiguous properties and air rights parcels and acquisitions of other development rights.
  • Represented principals in connection with the creation and licensing of a national mortgage bank.
  • Represented many commercial real estate owners, as well as anchor tenants in their respective leasing programs.
  • Represented a prominent New York real estate family in connection with a complete restructuring and reorganization of the family’s 60+ Manhattan properties.
